Why Pillow Choice Matters for Getting Proper Sleep

Pillows on Bed Pillow Choice Matters for Getting Proper Sleep

If you wonder why you might constantly toss and turn at night, it could be due to using the wrong pillow. This post can help acquaint you with making the perfect pillow choice for you.

When we think of getting a good comfortable night’s sleep, our first thought is the condition of our mattress. Yet, we hardly give that same amount of attention to our pillows. However, our pillow choice matters for getting proper sleep. By neglecting the condition of our pillows or picking the wrong one for how we sleep, then it can leave us tossing and turning to rob us of sleep. For that reason, I want to give you a few pointers on how to choose the right pillow to best work with how you sleep.

Sleeping Positions Influences Pillow Choice

You may hardly believe your pillow can be that important to getting that sleep you need, but it can make a big difference if you have been using the wrong one for your typical sleep position. You may find replacing it with the right pillow choice can be all you need to feel fresher every morning. For example, if you tend to sleep on your stomach, then you should be sleeping on a flatter pillow so your head doesn’t curve up. Sleeping on a plumper pillow in that stomach position could cause you punching it down how many times a night to adjust it. You could feel uncomfortable from how this type of pillow can leave your neck from the way it arches.

Maybe you prefer to sleep on your back. If this sleep position describes you, then your best bet is hardly a puffy, thick pillow, which can keep your neck up too high. On the contrary, you want one that isn’t too thin or thick but in between. A pillow like that is one that can give your neck just the right amount of support instead of straining it from too much filling height.

Some of us prefer to sleep on our sides. If you found yourself among those, then your head might be more comfortable using a puffy pillow with a thicker fill for support. The softer fill isn’t as good for keeping the head aligned with the spine than a slightly sturdier one.

Even this pooch is wanting to be comfortable on his pillow.

Anyone with allergies like myself was always advised to avoid down pillows. Even though they feel so soft and cozy, the feathers were thought to attract dust mites. By comparison, synthetic pillows were thought to be safer sleeping alternatives.

But the more time those synthetic pillows have dominated the market, the more that opinion may be changing with all the different filling materials. One study pointed out that the synthetics could be worse due to how porous some of the construction materials could be for accumulating dust mites, mold, etc.

Something else interesting is the variety of pillow that can cool from within their foam construction. If you’re going through menopause, you might want to try one. You could land up sleeping better if night sweats are your problem.

Perhaps, you haven’t been sleeping that well. Sometimes, all that is called for is a simple change to your routine such as a new pillow. Most likely, your sleep will improve soon after because pillow choice matters for getting proper sleep.

I am a back sleeper and don’t really move around a lot. I do have one of those cooling pillows and really like it. I guess I never thought about getting a pillow based on how you sleep.
