How to Improve Self-Esteem and Love Yourself

Some people constantly keep comparing themselves to their ideals of what they think is an image of perfection. Consequently, this artificial goal can be destructive and cripple their self-esteem in a negative way that keeps them from realizing their true personal worth. To improve self-esteem starts by taking a reality check of yourself and reformatting your beliefs so that you can finally love yourself and live a happier life.

The first thing we do without fail is to look into the mirror every day when we groom and dress. As you gaze at that reflection, you often see features that may strike you as less than symmetrical for that perfection of ultimate beauty. Perhaps, your eyes are too narrow, wide apart or bulging that you find a fault with. On the other hand, maybe your nose is too long, too wide or even too short or slopes up or under the wrong way. For others, it can be too small or large of the mouth or the shape of the lips could be crooked. Opening the mouth can cause even more low self-esteem issues if the teeth are less than blinding white, crooked or protruding for feeling bad about yourself. Then again, you can criticize yourself for hating the shape of your face because the cheeks are too wide, too angular, too narrow with a low forehead or high forehead and the list of facial beauty shortcomings could go on and on. Still others may have low self-esteem due to their bodies from feeling overweight or even underweight.

Instead of continuing to let those beauty imperfections bother you, you have several choices to make. You can learn to use makeup, and a new hairstyle or clothes to your advantage just like the models and celebrities do to improve your self-esteem. After all, you may think gorgeous models, film stars and singers were born into what they look like on the screen or on those glossy magazine pages. However, look closely at some of those faces because not all their features are symmetrical. No doubt, those that do may shock you when shown barefaced first thing in the morning. Always remember, the most successful and beautiful of those “ideals” are people just like you except that they are fortunate to have a team of professional hair, makeup, fashion, and photography experts to elevate them to visions of beautiful perfection.

Sometimes, it is the unique characteristic that helps a face stand out from the crowd that can be more captivating and memorable. The so-called flaw could be what make your face special such as the small space between your front teeth. Beautiful former model and actress, Lauren Hutton has such a space and it was celebrated just like gorgeous model, Cindy Crawford’s distinctive mole.

Visions of beauty through the years follow trends such as penciling in thin eyebrows instead of natural, thick bushy ones of today. Women went from robust, full-figures to ones with pencil-thin waists and then lanky before returning back to full-figures as what was considered beautiful at the time. You can either accept yourself or fall victim to exaggerated beliefs of what beauty is now.

You may also have low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness because you don’t feel smart or talented enough to get a better position or accomplish a goal that requires a certain skill. The fix to improve self-esteem could be just taking a class.

Friends that criticize or following celebrity feeds that can have you doubting yourself from what they keep sharing is not helpful to improve your self-esteem. Why subject yourself to keeping up or following them? What do you gain?

If you can’t accept working with what you are born with, then you always have another choice to improve your self-esteem. You can always seek out the opinion of a reputable plastic surgeon that can show you what is possible. However, elective plastic surgery can be quite expensive and is not covered by medical insurance like reconstructive plastic surgery.

What I am trying to get across is to stop comparing yourself constantly to others. It is a waste of time and energy. Be thankful for the remarkable person that you are and practice self-acceptance can help you improve self-esteem enough to finally love yourself.

    The is a helpful article and I thank you for sharing. Social media and the images we experience everywhere are constantly bombarding us with images and ideas to compare ourselves to which often leads to negative feelings about oneself. It’s one of the downsides to living in our world today.
