Dental floss is something that we all depend on to keep our teeth and gums healthy and at their best. However, this nylon strand of string is stronger than you may think with a tensile strength of about 31.5 pounds to about 25 pounds. With all that going for it, there are quite a few other interesting uses for dental floss that you may want to explore.
For instance, you can use it in your garden to support your plants tied to stakes. With all that tension this material can support, it can hold up plants better than ordinary cloth ties.
Another of these interesting other uses for silky thread is using the unwaxed variety for sewing on buttons, especially on coats. This really secures buttons better that are constantly in use than weaker threads.
Have you ever tried dental floss for repairing a necklace when it broke? Dental floss is excellent for restringing or using it to craft a new necklace with beads, crystals, etc.
Hanging lightweight pictures is often better using a dental floss when decorating for your walls. Wires can scratch unlike a few loops of an unwaxed dental floss to hang that picture.
It also can come in handy for a quick repair to a laundry basket until you can shop for a new one. This trick using dental floss even works for repairing a mesh laundry bag that you wash delicate items in.
Other innovative uses for dental floss are for slicing some foods easily. Of course, you want to stick with the unflavored variety that won’t leave any taste behind. But if you are making a layer cake and notice unevenness, I use the dental floss to level it for a better appearance before I put the cake together and frost.
In the kitchen, you can also use dental floss like a spatula when cookies get stuck to your pan. The dental floss manages to budge them, especially delicate ones better than a spatula at times.
You also use it like a cheese slicer for softer cheeses like mozzarella or provolone for sandwiches.
One more of these great other uses for dental floss is taking a long piece and fashioning a garland of puffed cereal or dried bread cubes to feed birds when it gets cold. Please don’t try to use popcorn. The kernels can get stuck in their tiny gut and kill them. The birds really appreciate that bit of extra food and are fun to watch.
I’m sure this hardly covers all the interesting other uses for dental floss, but these are the ones that I found the most helpful.
