Most of us grew up with holiday family traditions that were passed down through generations based on nationality. Our choice of New Year’s foods, especially when it comes to ushering in good luck is often reflected by what we serve for our own holiday dishes. You may think to add certain foods just to change your luck for New Year’s is nonsense. On the other hand, others may just automatically prepare those traditional dishes out of habit that the family always served. Nonetheless, it never hurts to start off a new year in the right direction just in case. After all, who couldn’t use good health, money and more love in our lives?

Pork of some variety and sauerkraut will be on many tables for bringing in good luck. The reason this meat ranks high on these special foods for New Year’s is because pigs use their snouts to root ahead when searching for new food instead of backwards. Thus, eating pork is a way to keep the problems of the past behind and look forward to a more abundant future and bright prospects.

Fish is another of these good luck foods to consider for this holiday. How this notion came about was because fish swim forward just as pigs move forward sniffing out new sources of food.

According to superstitions, you want to avoid bad luck choices of chicken and turkey. The reason this belief got started is because those birds scratch, looking for food. Since they scratch, the belief is that you’ll end up struggling to make ends meet like that scratching can represent scrambling just to get by.

As to the sauerkraut, it is green just like the color of money for help with more prosperity. Then again, pork also can appear on tables with black-eyed peas or just with other greens that also have that money label attached to it. Lentils are another because they resemble coins, another indication of money.

To live long, you might also want to include some dishes with long noodles. According to the Chinese, changshou mian or longevity noodles that can be up to two feet in length can help extend a life span. However, you want to be careful to keep it as long as possible while cooking since breaking it into smaller pieces equates with a shorter life.

Another of these good luck foods to welcoming in New Year’s is by serving a good luck sweet pretzel. This soft and delicious sweet bread is meant to be pulled apart and shared to give those around your table all around good fortune, health and love.

Regardless of how you celebrate, let me wish you and yours a happy New Year full of nothing but prosperity, health, love, and a never ending supply of joy!
