Slicing Bread: Mama’s Great Products Review and Giveaway–Ends 03/11/2022

Bread Slicer

Those of us that like to bake homemade bread know that slicing it evenly can take some doing. If you hope to get even slices, then a bread slicer helps cut the loaves more evenly for better sandwiches and toast. I had a plastic one, but a few of the separators broke off that control slice size and needed a new one. I had never tried a bamboo bread slicer so I was eager to review one and their bread knife from Mama’s Great Products for this review and giveaway.

What attracted me to the Mama’s Great bamboo bread slicer was how easy it was for storage unlike a bulky plastic bread slicer. This one folds down and has a section in the bottom to keep the side pieces instead of having them permanently up like my plastic one. Another thing I liked was you could adjust the sides in case your loaves were fatter, which you can’t do with a one piece plastic design.

I also thought a bamboo bread slicer would be more durable than plastic. Mama’s Great bread knife was also much longer than my other bread knives by a few inches with serrated edges, which is helpful for slicing. It also has a bit more width to it for additional control. This one has an ergonomic wooden handle and steel forged through it to reinforce it for longer wear.

After I used the Mama’s Great Products bamboo bread slicer and bread knife, I discovered that you need to be extremely careful as you try to slice because the wood does splinter easily. I rubbed some cooking oil over it to smooth it out as best I could. Then I tried to avoid that slot where I nicked to finish slicing my loaves. Nonetheless, a plastic bread slicer does get nicked too and scratches the surface, but without splinters.

Slicing Bread with Knife

In addition to slicing fairly well, the added length of the Mama’s Great bread knife was something I really liked for more help for homemade bread. I didn’t try this knife on tough-skinned vegetables and fruits such as pineapple as the company recommends, but will definitely attempt it once I buy pineapple.

The next time you plan to bake homemade bread, you should try my delicious oatmeal bread recipe. It tastes on the order of whole wheat bread without any whole wheat flour.

I like that this can not only be adjusted for two different thicknesses, but that it disassembles for easy storage. I can see using this for many things beyond bread.
