Those of us with pets know how special our furry buddies are. They have a way to capture our hearts with their antics and devotion that earns a place in our hearts. As a result, we do our best to take care of them. Yet, there are some things that you can do for pet safety that you may have unintentionally overlooked that could possibly save your furry buddy’s life.
Something you may not consider a lethal weapon can be an empty potato chip bag if your dog happens to find it in your trash. If you don’t rip that bag up and cut it into pieces so your dog’s head can’t get inside, then your dog could be drawn to the aroma and suffocate.
With how quickly puppies and kittens grow, it is important to check the fit of their collars often. What you may assume is loose enough from the last time that you checked could be insufficient in a shorter time than you think. You don’t want to cause your furry buddy pain. The best rule to follow is making sure that you can fit between two or three fingers inside between the pet’s collar and their neck.

Watching your cat or kitten attack string as you pull it along is fun, but never leave string or rubber bands laying around. Cats often think of them as prey and swallow them. A rubber band could get stuck in a cat’s digestive track and require surgery so be careful to hide all your rubber bands.
Clumping kitty litter may not seem like it could be any danger for pet safety, but there are chemicals that your cat ingests as well. Those chemicals can stick to their paws and often end up in their water bowls without you noticing until supplying fresh water. Therefore, you want to change their drinking water more often than once a day if you want your cat to stay healthy.
There are some people that like to take cats with them in the car, only holding them instead of keeping them in a pet carrier. However, they are not like dogs when they get nervous. Cats have claws and can land in the back of the driver’s neck or bite even the hands they love when frightened to cause an accident or ruin your car’s interior. For pet safety, cats especially, should ride in a pet carrier.
You may not have given much thought to walking your dog during winter after a snow storm. However, it is a good idea to remember to wash their feet once you bring them back inside from all the salt and chemicals of the products used to melt snow for pet safety.
