Chicory root coffee has a long and distinguished history that originated around 1705 in Holland where it was first roasted. Although you may not think of this type of beverage to replace your morning cup of coffee with its distinct stronger and nutty taste, it has more health benefits than you may know due to what this root can do for the body in its dry form.

When this root is dried, its properties go through a chemical change in how they are processed in the gut microbiota unlike in the raw form. Researchers suggest chicory roots may have even greater potential for preventing type 2 diabetes since it contains significant amounts of inulin and oligosaccharides from its dietary fiber.

Due to its sizeable contribution of fiber, it also helps better regulate the bowels by increasing gut bacteria. Anyone that suffers from constipation could find this powdered root as a solution for improved gut health.

As promising as that may be, there is another advantage to the dried form of this medicinal plant for health. It can also help inflammation by how it can stop various cytokines, antioxidant effects, and their free radical scavenging activity to protect vulnerable cells from damage.

Interestingly enough, there was another study suggesting its specific polysaccharides can slightly alter lipid metabolism and reduce inflammation in the liver. However, this finding is for such liver inflammation that did not result from alcoholism.

Those with osteoporosis may also want to consider a dried chicory root. According to another research study, it stimulates a peptide hormone called adiponectin that can cause cells to form bone tissue and strengthen weak bones.

If all those reasons aren’t enough to convince you in the good that this particular root can do for overall health, then consider how much it can help reduce stress that you might experience for too much caffeine in regular coffee. Besides drinking in a chicory root coffee, you also can bake with it to get your daily fill for those health benefits.

      Hi Susan,

You can buy it in Walmart or Wegmans or just go online and put in “chicory root powder + where to buy” to find other locations near you or online.

The chicory root powder is a finer form to add your coffee or baking. It has to be roasted. You can also buy it incorporated into some coffee, but be careful because you want it to replace the regular coffee. Still, it does help with keeping more with the coffee taste that we’re used to. Some others hare pure roasted chickory root coffee in usually an instant form that also may be a good option.

If you buy the roasted chicory root granules, it usually takes one teaspoon and will make a cup of tea.

This does not taste like coffee, it just has that coffee sort of aroma. However, it does have a lot of benefits.

One other thing, if you have irritable bowel syndrome or are allergic to any flowers like marigolds or daisies or herbs, then this may not be right for you.

      Best,

      Mary
