The Characters and the Conflict

The story introduces us to Jules Capelthorne, a young woman who leaves her junior publishing job in London to save her great-aunt’s century-old bookshop in the quaint seaside town of Portneath. For Jules, the dusty, wonky shelves of Capelthorne’s Books hold precious childhood memories. But she soon discovers the shop is on the brink of bankruptcy, with its future hanging by a thread.

The real trouble, however, arrives in the form of Roman Montbeau, the insufferable son of a rival family with a long-standing feud against the Capelthornes. Roman, a polished New York professional, opens a sleek, modern bookstore directly across the street from Jules’s beloved shop. It’s a classic battle of old vs. new, tradition vs. innovation, and family loyalty vs. a charming, infuriating rival.

What Works and What Could Be Better

In my opinion the ability to blend humor and heart is what does help make this book shine. Jules’s tenacity and creative ideas are a joy to read, and the fantastic comparisons between the two competing bookshops are true highlights to this contemporary romance. Her struggle to save her great-aunt’s legacy will resonate with anyone who has ever fought for something they love. While the romance between Jules and Roman could have had a bit more depth, it’s still a delicious slow burn as they are forced to confront their families’ history and their own biases. Alexander’s writing brings the seaside town of Portneath to life, making it to feel like a character in itself.

Final Thoughts

The Battle of the Bookshops that I shared in this review is a perfect escape for anyone who loves a good bookish tale with a touch of romance and a lot of heart. It’s a wonderful reminder that sometimes, the most priceless treasures aren’t found in a book, but in the people who share your love for them.
