Meihan Boey’s upcoming novel that I want to share with you in this book review, The Formidable Miss Cassidy, set for release on September 16, 2025, from Harper Perennial, is a charming and spirited blend of historical fiction and magical adventure. Set in colonial Singapore in the 1890s, the story introduces us to Miss Leda Cassidy, a Scottish governess whose unique set of skills extends far beyond teaching children. Leda is not just a normal woman; as the title suggests, she’s a heroine who can handle any crisis, whether it’s a wayward student or a malevolent ghost.

A Spirited Arrival
The story begins with Leda’s arrival in Singapore, where she’s immediately thrust into a supernatural conflict. The family she’s meant to work for is being terrorized by a vampiric spirit, and Leda wastes no time in putting her abilities to the test. She is a woman of action, and the real fun of the book begins when it becomes clear that her arrival has stirred up more than just one problem. The novel keeps readers on their toes as one mystical threat after another appears, highlighting how a woman’s work truly never stops.
The Bonds of the Family
The pace shifts when she takes on a new position with the widower Mr. Kay and his twin daughters. This is where the story deepens, as Miss Cassidy’s capabilities are tested in new and more personal ways. What starts as a simple respite from her extraordinary life quickly becomes the one challenge she might not be able to solve. She has grown to cherish this new “found family,” and her formidable skills are now used to protect the people she cares about, adding a touching and powerful layer to the mystery.
My Final Verdict
The Formidable Miss Cassidy is incredibly entertaining as well as a witty read is my take on this after reading this book for my review. It’s the kind of book that’s perfect for anyone seeking a fun read, offering a delightful historical setting and a charming mystery simply seasoned with a sprinkling of magic. Additionally, it was a wonderful experience to learn more about the cultures and stories inner-woven into this tale, which may be unfamiliar to many readers. This approach ensures it will appeal to both historical fiction fans and fantasy readers alike, as the magical elements enhance the story rather than dominating it. Check it out!
Thanks to Harper Perennial for this #gifted book for this review.
