Beyond the Store-Bought Bun:

Making your own homemade buns elevates any hamburger into a gourmet experience. Packed with fresh onion bits, these buns boast a delicate sweetness and tasty depth that enhance any burger into an
epicurean affair. Unlike store-bought buns, you get complete control over the ingredients, ensuring freshness and quality Plus, these buns are surprisingly easy to customize with your favorite herbs or spices for a truly unique flavor profile.

Here’s the Ingredients You’ll Need:

Sugar – All bread needs some sugar to even out the other ingredients.
Canola Oil – This is the best, healthy vegetable oil that contributes moistness and tenderness to these buns.
Salt – In other baking, I usually eliminate salt. However, it is important for taste, but also for improving the gluten for producing light and airy buns.
Medium Onion –Any variety is fine such as sweet Vidalia or even stronger yellow onions for this recipe.
Milk – Use what milk you have in the refrigerator or pantry. I use 2 percent.
Egg – I use a large egg for a richer, moist dough and better texture.
Active Dry Yeast – This is the only type of yeast I use. It takes longer to rise unlike Rapid Rise Yeast, but it is also less expensive. I always buy it in big bags since I do a lot of baking homemade breads.
Warm Water (Not Hot) – This is important for helping your yeast grow.
All-Purpose Flour – No fancy flour is required to make this recipe work, but plain, all-purpose flour

Making homemade bread is easier than you believe. It also is more economical, satisfying and so delicious while filling your home with such an appetizing fragrance. Soft and Sweet Homemade Onion Buns

1/4 cup of sugar
1/4 cup of canola oil
1 teaspoon of salt
1 half of a medium onion, finely chopped
1-3/4 cups of milk, scalded
1 large egg
1 package of dry yeast (2-1/4 teaspoons)
1/4 cup warm water (not hot) + 1 teaspoon of sugar
5-6 cups of sifted flour

  1. Add the yeast to the warm (not hot water) along with the teaspoon of sugar in a mixing bowl.
  2. Give the yeast a few minutes to start seeing foamy water from the yeast feeding on the sugar.
  3. In the meantime, scald the milk and stir in the sugar, oil and salt. Allow these ingredients to cool before beating in the egg.
  4. Stir in the yeast along with three cups of the sifted flour. Beat this until smooth. I use a wooden spoon to incorporate the flour with enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. You may need more or less, depending on the humidity.
  5. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place dough in greased bowl, turning to grease the surface. (You can also dump your measuring cup that had the oil in it over the dough and rub it over the top). Cover and let rise in a warm spot about an hour or hour and a half or until doubled in bulk.
  7. Punch down and let rest for ten minutes before shaping into hamburger onion buns. I make about 10 large buns. You can make them smaller if you prefer.
  8. Let the buns rise again for another forty-five minutes or until doubled.
  9. Bake in a 350-degree oven for 20-25 minutes, depending on how your oven is regulated.
  10. ENJOY!
